Revised Tournament Schedule through State and Natquals

Hi Folks,

There have been some significant changes to the remaining tournament schedule which are reflected in the chart below. We have rescheduled Mt. Vernon due to snow, and we have added Newport, also rescheduled due to snow.  Puyallup, which was debate only, has been deleted.  We have just three weeks to go until districts, so many of you will need to sign up for practices!  I am in the process of adjusting for the furlough week next week.  Here are highlights of the remaining in-state tournaments prior to natquals and state.  I will have separate meetings for students  attending those events.

January 27-28             Rescheduled: Mt. Vernon HS + Dinner  (Bid in Debate)

February 3-4               Kamiak HS (Bid in Debate)

February 10-11           University High School “Thomas S Foley” in Spokane

February 15                District One Speech  at Edmonds Heights K-12

February 17-18           Rescheduled: Newport HS All events, NIETOC bid

February 25                Puget Sound NFL Congress, Olympia

February 28                District One Debate and Congress at Sedro Woolley HS

March 1-3                   Puget Sound NFL IEs and Debate

March 10                    State IEs at UPS

March 16, 17              State Debate at Gonzaga in Spokane

Mt. Vernon January 27-28: It’s a bid in PF and LD. Note that congress runs in pattern B, and that it’s possible to do both impromptu and congress. Email me if you want to do that. Some of you did not initially enter because it is approaching the end of the semester and you were concerned about homework.  However, because of the move, we now have furlough that entire week, meaning you get out at 10:30, so you may have more time than you think.  It’s 50s dress, which I hope many of you will do, because it’s fun!  On Saturday night we go to the Chuckwagon Diner, which is a 50s style Americana Restaurant.  If you want to add, drop, or change entries, please e-mail me directly.  This is a parent transport tournament and we meet in the staff lot at 1:30 pm on Friday, 6:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Kamiak February 3-4: Also a bid in PF and LD. Kamiak has all the normal events plus Edcomm. Note that congress runs in pattern B, and that it’s possible to do both impromptu and congress.  Those wanting to do that should sign up for both. So it’s possible here to do debate, congress, a pattern B, (or just two pattern Bs and no congress) and two pattern As.  Extempers, your second A should only be Edcomm, due to time constraints. We normally have a large turnout, since this is after semester finals. This is a parent transport tournament and we meet in the staff lot at 2:30 pm on Friday, 7:00 a.m. on Saturday.

The Tomas S Foley tournament at University HS in Spokane February 10-11 :  I’ve sent e-mails out on this already.  This is perhaps the best tournament of the year. As of this moment there are just five spots left, so if you want one, you need to sign up right away.  You will need to let me know your alternate events this week.  The $75 fee is due to the bookkeeper by 2/9.  This is a bus transportation tournament.  We will leave SHS on 2/9 at 3:30 p.m. from the big tree.  Friday will be a school-related absence.  We will leave Spokane around 9 a.m. on Sunday and arrive back in Snohomish between 3 and 4 p.m., approximately.

District One Speech at Edmonds HRC Wednesday, 2/15: We will take just four to six people per event, and you can do just one pattern A and one pattern B.  Selection of students to attend will be based on your participation in practices and tournaments, your record, and my perception of your ability at this time. There is no other way to attend state speech, so if you want to do that, you have to do this tournament. There are just two rounds of competition, so the tournament is over very fast and you’ll be home by 9:30 or so, which is good because it’s on a Tuesday night.  We leave right after school and will arrange parent transportation because the tournament is only about 17 miles away.  The tournament hasn’t yet posted, so I’ll send out times later.  One final note:  At the moment, we have plenty of openings in expos, oratory, duo, I/R and D/I.  If you want to go to state, and state is fun, then you might want to concentrate on those events and write an oratory or expos, etc.  It’s not hard to do and it’s not hard to win at districts, and then you have a month to polish it for state.

Newport HS at ??? February 17th and 18thThis is a NIETOC bid tournament, which makes it important for Duos, DIs, His, and Oratories.  Newport has moved their tournament date due to the snowstorm, which was good news for us.  However, they have not yet confirmed the location.  It may be at The UW Bothell extension, which is 12 miles away, or at BCC, which is about 25.  In either case we’re going, and it will probably be a parent transport tournament with limits on entry.  They have all speech events, debate, and congress.  For those of you who want to qualify for NIETOC, getting a bid here will be easier than getting one at state, so I would recommend it.  More on this one as I get info and can make transportation and scheduling plans.

District One Debate at Sedro Woolley:  We already have one LD and one PF bid to state, and we may pick up the second at either Mt. Vernon or Kamiak.  If you have your bid in PF or LD, you can skip this one, so we may or may not have anyone going in those events.  I will also take up to six or seven people for their congress bid. There are only six congress bids out of our district and we can claim only four of those as a school, but I think those going will have a good chance of qualifying for state.  This will be van transport from the staff lot, and we will probably leave either right before or after the final bell, since this is on a Tuesday.  More on this one as I get info and can make transportation and scheduling plans.
