That's a common misconception of people new to the idea of speech and debate. Yes, there are debate events, three of them in fact. However, there are actually 8 speech events, only a couple of which actually require a knowledge of current events. (Though that knowledge does benefit the rest). There's really something for everyone, those who like drama, those who like speaking, and those who like to debate.
